About Us
Niger State Teacher Professional Development Institute (NSTPDI), Minna was established in 2019 pursuant to the enactment of N. S. L. N. No. 11. It was established as a result of the adoption of the recommendation of the Revitalization of Teacher Education and Professionalism (RETEP) Committee set up in 2017 by the Executive Governor of Niger State, His Excellency, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello. The recommendation was made in the Committee’s report - “Repositioning Teacher Education in Niger State: A Framework Initiative and Implementation Policy” to the government on Thursday, 9th November 2017.
RETEP, with an accomplished educationist, Hajiya Dije Jibrin Bala, MFR, mni as chairperson and such other distinguished educationists like Dr. Usman Bokani Ahmed MFR, Professor Insofor, Dr. Hadiza Asabe Muhammad and Professor Haruna Rasheed among others, were given the mandate to establish and manage the Institute. From 2019 to 2023, while the Committee went through some kind of metamorphosis, it managed the Institute to everyone’s admiration until the current government of His Excellency, Alhaji Umar M. Bago came on board.
Within this period, the achievements of the Institute included the graduation of four sets of 586 pre-service students pursuing their Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Education Degree programmes with Niger State College of Education, Minna and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai on Niger State Government sponsorship. NSTPDI has affiliation with Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria graduating 215 students comprising 52 with post degree Professional Diploma in Education (PDE), 5 with Higher Diploma and 58 with Diploma Certificates in various areas of teacher professional development.
As a fulcrum of research and development in teacher professionalism, it has blazed the trail in pushing and has provided proof of concept for the viability of teaching Basic Principles and Practice of Education at the Senior Secondary School teacher pre-service level. It collaborated with NERDC and TRCN to develop a curriculum and examination leading to the award of Basic Certificate in Education (BCE) of the Institute. The adoption of Principles and Practice Education to be offered in Secondary Schools by the High-level Policy Committee Meeting on the Review of Senior Secondary Education Curriculum Structure and Benchmarks which was held on the 19th of December, 2023 at Rockview Hotel, Abuja affirmed and endorsed the research and development efforts of the Institute in that direction. The Institute is an associate member of the African Federation of Teacher Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA).

The mission of the Institute is: “To deliver world class teacher professional development through deployment of state-of-the-art facilities and fit-for-purpose methodologies that produce competent and competitive teachers capable of delivering functional educational outcomes”.
